Am Himmel – a heavenly view

Want to leave the hustle and the bustle of the city? Then why not go to heaven (German: Himmel)?! Just a short car or underground/bus ride from downtown will take you to forests, vineyards and green meadows on the slopes of the hills, the city lying below your feet. Once you have arrived at the top of the hill, you will notice the octagon-shaped building. That’s the Café “Am Himmel. Either you take a rest and a hot or cold drink before a walk – or you reward yourself with a piece of cake after some exercise.

60ies cinema

Once the biggest cinema in town, the Gartenbaukino now feels like travelling back to the 60ies. To the good old times when there was only one big screen and the chairs were red and fluffy.

Since 1973, this popular first-run-theater with a capacity of 736 guests and a big screen is also the principal theatre of the Viennale-Vienna International Film Festival, Austria’s most important international film event, as well as one of the oldest and best-known festivals in the German-speaking world.

If you are not up for a movie, you can zip cocktails at the bar. Groovy!

Fools´ Tower (Narrenturm)

The tower was built in 1784 and back then was the first psychiatric hospital in the world. The rotunda offered solitary cells for 139 inmates. The Narrenturm is part of the area that had once been the general hospital of Vienna, since 1998 it’s the campus of the main university.

Nowadays the tower is home to Vienna’s Pathologic-anatomical Museum. One can have a look at human and animal exhibits, a lot of malformations but also medical devices that make you wonder on what planet they might have been in use.
With its strict geometric shape and lack of any adornment it is one of Vienna´s less-known architectural treasures.

Palmenhaus

It is one of the most spectacular locations in Vienna. The Jugendstil imperial palm house has been masterfully renovated by architects Eichinger oder Knechtl. The imposing sun-filled glass conservatory filled with giant palms is now a multifaceted meeting point for wining and dining or just a drink. The Palmenhaus serves as a cafe, a gourmet restaurant and a cocktail bar with DJs. The terrace of the palm house is also a very nice place to stay. At a (coffee) break you can enjoy the view down to the Burggarten Vienna, which was originally laid out in the year 1818 as a private garden of the emperor on an area of approx. 38.000 m². It is located directly at the Ringstrasse beside the Hofburg and the Albertina. A must when in Vienna!

Order a Krügerl

We are a nation of beer drinkers. When you go for a beer with your new local friends, order a “Krügerl” for a large beer of the local draft, or a “Seidel” for a small beer. In the summertime before sunset a “Radler” (beer with lemonade) is the real deal.
